The eight candidates vying for three open Safety Harbor City Commission seats—(l-r) Janet Hooper, Carlos Diaz, Boozarjomheri, Luanne Lambert, Joe Ayoub, Nancy Besore, Damon Lister and Scott Long—pose at the candidate forum on January 24, 2017.

The 2017 Safety Harbor municipal election is a month away, and with eight candidates vying for three open commission seats, including mayor, it promises to be a hectic finish to what has already been a lengthy, and sometimes contentious, campaign season.

The candidates participated in a forum at the Safety Harbor Community Center on January 24, where they were given two minutes to answer questions that were posed by the audience regarding issues that are affecting the city, including downtown growth, lot setbacks, what should become of the Firmenich property and what should be done next at the Waterfront Park.

Unfortunately, with so many candidates and a limited amount of time, it was difficult to get to know each one.

That’s where we come in.

As we have done in the past, Safety Harbor Connect contacted each of the eight candidates asked them to respond to a number of personal, professional and political questions, and to give their thoughts on what they believe are the key issues affecting the city today.

Their responses have been reprinted verbatim, with no editing other than minor formatting changes, spelling and/or grammar corrections.

We hope these profiles help to further inform Safety Harbor voters about the candidates they will be casting ballots for on March 14, and we would like to thank all of the candidates for their participation and wish them the best luck next month.
