Safety Harbor City Commission Meeting Tonight at 7:30
The Safety Harbor City Commission convenes tonight for the final time in 2014, and there are a number of items on the agenda that will be addressed.
Two of the more pressing issues have to do with the proposed amendments to the city’s charter.
For the past two months the five city commissioners, and residents, discussed and debated two of the changes that were suggested by the Charter Review Committee – requiring the city manager to be a resident of Safety Harbor, and restricting term limits for civic board members.
Tonight the commission will vote on the proposed changes on second reading, and it will also appoint members to two boards: the parks and rec advisory board and the library advisory committee.
In addition the commission will designate appointees to the Metropolitan Planning Organization and the Pinellas Planning Council.
Another item of note is the approval of a land deal that will see the city receive 10 acres of property from longtime Safety Harbor resident George Weiss and his family.
Last month officials received word that Weiss wanted to donate the parcel known as Folly Farm, located on Martin Luther King, Jr. Street, to the city in exchange for, well, basically nothing. All the Weiss family requested is that the city rezone the land as protected park space, develop a five-year plan to clean and maintain the property, and dedicate the land in the Weiss family name.
Mr Weiss also asked that the deal be consummated by December 31, which is one reason the transaction is expected to become official this evening.
Other items on tonight’s agenda include:
- a resolution to vacate a right-of-way on 3rd Avenue North
- approval of the final development plat for the proposed Philippe Oaks subdivision
- approval of the Blake Real Estate Paddle for Kids event on May 2, 2015
The Safety Harbor City Commission meets at Safety Harbor City Hall, located at 750 Main St. in downtown Safety Harbor. Tonight’s meeting is scheduled to begin at 7:30 pm.
- Charter Review Committee Recommendations Met With Much Debate
- Term Limit Debate Gets Tense at SHCC Meeting
- Safety Harbor Resident Donates Majority of His Property to City
Any idea of the plans for the park? Dog park? I live just down the road.
According to the agreement, Eric, the land may be used “solely for a public park or greenspace, which may include biking and walking trails through the property.” It also says the City may add benches, pavilions, water fountains, etc…So I would think dogs will be permitted.

Thank you Jeff. You are always on top of everything!
