Safety Harbor City Commission to choose photo winner

Another light agenda awaits the Safety Harbor City Commission when it meets Monday night to, among other things, choose a Best In Show photography contest winner

Safety Harbor participated in the National League of Cities’ “Love My City” initiative this year, which included a Love My City photo contest. The city received a total of 894 entries, and the Public Art Committee chose these winners, who will be honored on Monday:

- Nature & Wildlife – Barbi Kiser
- Special Events & Programs – Veronica Botts
- Parks & Landmarks – Dale Dervin
- Safety Harbor’s Thriving Downtown – Chuck Alestra
- Love My City – Jacqueline Faust
The Public Art Committee also selected 12 finalists for the Best In Show Award, and Commission on Monday will choose the winner, who will be honored at a future Commission meeting.

Ordinances or changes to city code require two hearings before the City Commission.
Zoning designation: Commission voted 5-0 on first reading to zone recently annexed property at 2450 Madrid Ave. as R-2 (Single-Family Residential).
ALSO ON THE AGENDA …
Waiver of special trash and yard pickup fees: April has historically been recognized as “Spring Cleanup Month” but last year Commission voted to waive special trash and yard pickups fees for March and April, and will be asked to do the same again this year.
Budget amendment: In a housekeeping item, Commission will be asked to approve increasing the Stormwater Fund by $177,000 and decreasing its fund reserve by the same amount to account for Mullet Creek improvement project that was not completed last year because Pinellas County is still working on its portion of it. Once the county is finished, the city will complete its portion of the erosion control project.
Parks & Recreation Advisory Board appointment: The term of Phyllis Lubin on the board that advises Commission on parks and recreation issues is expiring, and she has requested reappointment. An application has also been received from Scott Hood.
Public Art Committee appointments: The terms of Marie Murrary, Colleen Baxter and Susan Zinkel on the committee that advises Commission on public arts projects are expiring, and Murray and Baxter have requested reappointment. Jody Grutza is the alternate, and the only other application is from Jennifer Gray.
Christopher Palmieri Employee of the Quarter: Carol Bancroft, a staff assistant in the Leisure Services Department, will be honored.
Consent agenda: Items expected to have little debate, such as approval of the last meeting’s minutes and most contracts, are included en masse in the consent agenda, though any Commissioner can ask for any item to be considered separately. This meeting’s consent agenda includes only the approval of last meeting’s minutes.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE
Attend the meeting: The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 750 Main St., with the workshop beginning at 6 p.m. Meetings typically run from 1.5 to three hours. Residents are given the opportunity to speak on all agenda items, except for presentations and consent agenda items. Come forward when asked by the mayor, state your name and address, and you’ll be given three minutes to address the Commission. For any issues not on the agenda, or any item that is on the consent agenda, residents get three minutes to speak at the beginning of the meeting during “Audience to be Heard.”
