Safety Harbor City SealThe Safety Harbor City Commission meets tonight for its regularly scheduled bi-monthly meeting, and as usual, there are a number of important items on the agenda.

One item of note is a resolution calling for the approval of a purchase order for work to be done on the City’s proposed 9/11 memorial.

Last year the Safety Harbor Fire Department successfully lobbied for a memorial to be built on City Hall grounds using a piece of steel that the department had obtained from the WTC site.

The projected cost of the project, which the City hopes to have completed in time for this year’s 9/11 memorial ceremony, is just over $54,000.

To date the City has received more than $44,000 in donations, including a check for $21,115 from the owners of Master Cut Tools in December, as well as in-kind services valued at $14,520; that leaves an additional $9,640.87 needed to complete the project.

Tonight, City officials will ask the Commission to include a Capitol Improvement Fund reserve in that amount in the budget, with the hopes that more money will be raised via private donations and brick paver sales in order to offset any City funds used for the project.

Other items on the agenda include a presentation on the Countywide Plan Update, as well as an updated presentation on the county’s Greenlight Pinellas Plan.

Note: This is the final meeting before the commission’s annual summer break. The next City Commission meeting is scheduled for Monday, July 21.

Also, there will be a budget workshop held prior to tonight’s meeting, at 6:30 p.m. Both meetings are open to the public.

The Safety Harbor City Commission meets at City Hall, located at 750 Main Street in downtown Safety Harbor. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
