The Safety Harbor City Commission honored outgoing human resources director Bill Cropsey on Monday night for his longtime service to the city.

Cropsey, who began working for the city in 1994, is set to retire at the end of September after two decades as the city’s HR director.

During the Presentations portion of the City Commission meeting, Mayor Andy Steingold and the other commissioners paid tribute to the hard working and well-liked Cropsey.

“Mr. Cropsey has served 23 different commissions…five city managers and 50-plus commissioners over his 20 years of service to the city, the mayor said. “He’s been a hard-working and dedicated employee.”

“It’s not often in today’s world where people stay on the job for 20 years,” he added. “Bill’s loyalty and commitment will be sadly missed here in Safety Harbor.”

“I just want to say thank you for your service and your time,” Vice Mayor Cliff Merz said. “A lot of what has occurred, regarding insurance and various things you’ve been working on, has occurred a direct result of your diligence.”

“Keeping employees happy is part of your job, and you’ve selected some pretty good employees and you’ve taken good care of them, and of course they’ve taken care of the city,”Commissioner Carlos Diaz added.

“I think it’s had a positive effect on where the city is today.”

After Mayor Steingold presented Cropsey with a Key to the City plaque, and City Manager Matt Spoor related how Bill was the person who hired him for his position, the outgoing HR director said a few words.

“Mayor, commissioners, thank you for those kind words,” he said. “I also want to thank you for the support that you’ve given me and all the employees over the years. It really made my job an awful lot easier.”

“Somebody asked me today, ‘aren’t you gonna miss Safety Harbor?'” he continued. “And I thought about it, and I don’t know if I’m gonna miss the work so much, but I’m gonna miss the people. This is such a great place to work.”

At the conclusion of the ceremony, Mayor Steingold introduced the city’s new HR director, Kim Nicholls, noting that as one of his last official acts, Cropsey had a hand in hiring his replacement.
