You never know what you’re going to see in Safety Harbor, especially during Third Friday.

Last night, patrons of the monthly Main Street music series were treated to a rare sight: a tiger being pulled in a cage on wheels downtown.

Further investigation revealed the tiger was Pinellas County’s own Ty, a 400-lb. beauty who made headlines last year when he had to have a giant hairball removed from his stomach.

The surgery was partially performed by Dr. Don Woodman of the Animal Hospital of Northwood, located on Enterprise Road in Safety Harbor.

One of Dr. Woodman’s assistants informed me that Ty was just visiting the facility for a regular check up this week, so they decided to bring him to Third Friday as part of their efforts to educate people about different animals at the event every month.

“He’s here to have fun,” she said. “He enjoys being around people.”

From the size of the crowds around Ty’s cage, they enjoy being around him just as much, if not more!

Here’s a few more shots of Ty the Tiger at Third Friday:

  1. I am absolutely disgusted that the city allowed this – they obviously did NOT review Mr. Yates appalling record of animal abuse. Shame on you Safety Harbor!
